![]() One of the major new changes to the suite (on the Windows side, too) is the ability to collaborate and share your work using Web apps. Add the ease of compatibility with a strong feature set across the entire suite and you have a desktop office package that's almost a must-have in both large and small businesses, and even home productivity settings. But if you work with primarily Windows users who use Office, it's tough to beat the automatic compatibility of using the same programs. Certainly many Mac users will look first at Apple's iWork for a productivity suite, and it is a great office suite in its own right. Once we dug deep into the feature set of Office 2011 for Mac, we saw there were several enhancements that made the whole suite better, and some of the niftier tweaks are even Mac-exclusive. Not only has it nearly reached feature parity (and cross compatibility) with the Mac counterparts to Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, but it has finally added Outlook, the e-mail and scheduling client Mac business fans have been clamoring for for years. Though the latest package is still not on par with the Windows version (you get only the four main programs-a big difference when you consider the Windows version has 10), Microsoft made a big leap with this latest version for the Mac in several other ways. This link from Microsoft tells you how to clear out those older registration files.Microsoft Office for Mac 2011 offers a solid update to the Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and the other members of the productivity suite. In that case, you have to get rid of the Office registration files that remember what the original hardware was, and then reinstall, and then enter your Product Key, and then– finally!– do the “Activate by Phone” method. For example, if you decide to replace your hard drive with something better– I like the Solid State Drives (SSDs) from Crucial-– you’ll be asked to activate Office 2011, and in that case, you’ll never be able to… because each installation of Office is “keyed” to the hardware it’s originally installed on, and that includes the hard drive, and the Activation ID and Confirmation ID will only work on that particular configuration. The reason for this could be that you’ve moved Office 2011 for the Mac to a new machine, or to a new hard drive, by cloning the drive. There’s a chance that things still won’t work. That will get you started down the right path. You try again later and it still doesn’t work.Īnother option: call Microsoft’s general support number (1-80) and say “Office for Mac Activation Department” to the robot that answers. You enter your Product Key, you click the “Activate” button… and you get a message about the activation server being unavailable and a recommendation to try again later. Maybe it’s because Microsoft “end of lifed” Office 2011 in September 2017 (read Microsoft’s announcement about it here). Anyway, now you know.Īctivating Microsoft Office 2011 for the Mac using the built-in online activation wizard seems to be broken. They’ll also text it to you, which is a good idea. The only way to get that URL was to call the toll-free Microsoft activation number and LISTEN as it is read to you. Oddly enough, no amount of googling would pull up the page I needed. Excel and PowerPoint will also be activated. Now open up Word 2011 and like a miracle, you’re activated. If you’re asked for an administrator’s password in order to drag that file there, put your password in (this is your “user” password, the one you use to unlock your Mac). (This isn’t “your” Preferences folder, inside your hidden Library– this is the Mac’s Preferences folder.) Put the file you downloaded, which will be called .plist, into the Mac’s Preferences folder. In case that page gets taken down, here’s a link to the file behind the Download button.Īll you do is download that file, quit all of your Microsoft Office apps, then go the Preferences folder inside of the Library folder inside of your hard drive. ![]() (Of course you can just click the link here.) You’ll be taken to a Microsoft support page that looks like this, at least the top of it does: Once that’s established, the robot will provide the following URL: Tell it you are trying to activate Office 2011 for the Mac. You won’t be prompted to provide an Installation ID. You will be connected to an automatic system. UPDATE Monday, August 28th, 2023: There’s a new and better way to do this. ![]()
